This woman, from a 1930s Chesterfield cigarettes ad, projects such confidence and elegance. The slogan that went with her was, “True individualism cannot be copied.”

A breathtakingly lovely ad for stockings from 1922. The sheerness of the lady’s slip, the ornate peacock motif, and her self-admiring stance project a kind of pure joy and graceful sexiness that you’d have a hard time matching in today’s ad campaigns. This woman feels beautiful. The image tells you that.

I’m kind of a cynic in the face of vintage ad absurdity. As much as I like these ads, they’re often rather strange and mildly offensive in retrospect. However, for whatever reason, I find Kodak ads the most consistently beautiful, natural, and sweet to this modern viewer. Merry Christmas!
